Commonwealth Senate Inquiry into Australia’s Disaster Resilience
Background
The Senate Select Committee on Australia’s Disaster Resilience was appointed to inquire into Australia’s preparedness, response and recovery workforce models, as well as alternative models to disaster recovery. The committee is considering the role of the Australian Defence Force, volunteer groups, not-for-profit organisations and state-based services, and the support required to improve Australia’s resilience and response to natural disasters.
Our submission
GAP made a submission arguing that catastrophic disasters will exceed the capability and capacity of volunteer groups and not-for-profit organisations, and that many advanced capabilities are required to understand, prevent and respond to catastrophic disasters. GAP’s submission to this Senate Committee drew on GAP’s earlier submission to the Defence Strategic Review. You can read the full GAP submission here.
